August 2007 sees the release of this stunning album from one of the latest Modular records signing, The Softlightes. Born out of San Diego USA, The Softightes are possibly the most blissful signing yet to label du jour, Modular Records - capturing the magic of the likes of Hot Chip, Grandaddy and Flaming Lips all in one.
Singer Ron Fountenberry, (great-grandson of the pioneering Houston civil rights activist, and long-time friend of Cody Chestnutt) has been tinkering away making music for years, but it’s his latest collaboration with San Diego-based bassist Kristian Dunn forming The Softlightes, which pricked up many ears in USA and UK alike.
This is dazzling, warm, fuzzy pop music that resonates fantastically live. Subtle, with super infectious melodies, this album really gets under the skin.
The glitchy electronica of debut single Girl Kills Bear (which sold out instantly on 7” in November) and the epic sing along Heart Made of Sound which again, sold out instantly in March this year, displays just two sides of this home-grown masterpiece which represents the lo-fi but compelling nature of their collaboration. Other rockier tracks include The robots in my bedroom were playing arena rock and Black skinheads in white pants completing an altogether multi dimensional gem of a pop album. In parts Belle and Sebastian, in others a jangly, ecclesiastical, affair and always all-round memorable and compelling pop songs.
