What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Ant feeling ecstatic.

In terms of consistent high quality output, the Hyperdub label and Kevin Martin's The Bug project, rank as some of the finest experiments in Jamaican influenced electronic music in recent years. So it seems a natural progression for the two to be working together. There was of course the EP by Pressure on the label which is an alias of the man himself.... This outing though, under his Bug guise encompasses all that is exciting about his productions. The crushing heaviness and infectious dancehall rhythms you want and need are all present. Ultra heavy too. With Roll Deep MC's Killa P and Flow Dan droppin' some grime / ragga rhymes about weed, guns and shit you know it's a winner. Not that I think I'm hard like, listening to gangsta' shit but c'mon it's dancehall, grime styles. It would sound a wee bit stupid if they were chattin' about going to the library, playing with their train sets and doing jigsaws and that. (We should have reviewed this last week but we never got sent a promo and the courier couldn't do his job properly.) 'Skeng' is the name of the record and it has a wicked Kode 9 mix. I'm getting all muddled up now because a hedgehog has appeared in our garden... hedgehogs rule...

What the label says:

An exclusive sneak preview from The Bug’s devastating new album, due on Ninja Tune later this year. Already a fixture in sets by Kode9 and DMZ’s Loefah, ‘Skeng’ has been trashing danceflloors around the world for the last few months, with its militantly slow half-step and brick wall of bass. The track is ignited by the gunman comic genius of two members of East London’s prolific Roll Deep grime crew, Killa P and Flow Dan, whose low slung, rapid fire deliveries bulldoze all who stand in their path. On the flip, Kode9 drags the vocals into the video game arcade, adding spring to the step with his bouncy remix and more rewinds than your dead, dusty tape deck.

About the humble 12":

The 12" is the big brother of records as it's an fatter version of the 7", with a vast scope for an array of remixes and B sides. They are slightly less portable their smaller inched brethren but they're by no means inferior. Often the grooves are spaced wider apart and thus sound much much better. You can fit ample tracks on and if worse comes to worse they make fine plates (should your crockery go awol). Yes, there's a hole but holes are easy to sort out. Once again they're available on many different colours and guises. The best thing about a 12" is the potential vastness of the artwork. Also playable on many speeds!!

'it's well slicing man.'
