What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Mingus Rude feeling happy.

The Black Keys: "Just Got to Be" (V2) As you may or may not already know are a couple of white boys who to me make the funkiest blues racket this side of that other blues type duo The Black Stripes. Maybe they could both have a name change, still both sides, despite Phil's protestations, are good examples of bar room / truck stop kick ass rawk. Yes we are still in the 21st century! Good quality nostalgic fun.

What the label says:

The Black Keys release their new single “Just Got To Be” / “Black Door” through V2 Records The band will also be re-releasing their album “Magic Potion” on 13.8.2007 and this new version will contain a live DVD as well as the videos for “Your Touch” and the brand new single “Just Got To Be”. The Black Keys hail from Akron, Ohio, and the band have released the following albums over the last five years, The Big Come Up (2002), Thickfreakness (2003), Rubber Factory (2004) & Magic Potion (2006). An explosive live act, the last time The Black Keys played in London they sold out Shepherds Bush Empire twice and the Forum in one week. The Black Keys have recently completed a sold out tour in the US, playing with the likes of Dinosaur, Jr. The band are also playing key rock festivals including Coachella, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza which commences on August 3rd in Chicago. The Black Keys sound is crossed between John Lee Hooker style juiced out of the skull blues, blended with white soul of Free and Led Zep at their most primal. The Black Keys are Dan Auerbach (vocals / guitars) and  Patrick Carney (drums).

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
