What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Mingus feeling happy.

XX Teens: "Darlin" (Mute Irregulars) Formerly known as the Xerox Teens this is a riotously raucous ramble that sounds like eighties post-poonkers Membranes or Bogshed, yeah great names I know and this single (One sided, etched, limited no doubt) should put them in the same illustrious company. It's the first pop tune I've heard in ages that uses the steel pan (albeit a synthesised one) to great effect. This could well be single of the week on another 7" packed week at the towers. Mingus like!

What the label says:

XX TEENS are set to release a new single, the first release on the new Mute Irregulars label, on the 16th July 2007.

‘Darlin’, a brand new re-recorded version of the track which originally featured on the 2006 ‘Xerox Teens EP’, is released on 7” vinyl and download, features artwork from regular collaborator Adam Latham and will come backed with a new mix by Andrew Weatherall. Following a highly successful collaboration with Sheffield filmmaker Simon Green for the last single ‘B-54’, the XX TEENS have again worked with Simon on a short film for ‘Darlin'. Expect politicians, yellow suited men, dinner ladies, tramps and more.  The video is currently playlisted on MTV2.

The new single is the band’s fifth single and follows last years ‘Onkawara’ / ‘B -54’ release, the aforementioned 'Xerox Teens EP', 2005’s 'Round' / ' Man It’s Hard To Beat A Woman' and their debut from September 2004 ' Chasing your Tail'.  All were limited editions.

Following a recent live performance involving a dancing dog display team dancing to a selection of popular hits (‘Cotton Eye Joe’, ‘D.I.S.C.O’) performed by the band, the newly monikered XX TEENS line up of Danny Fancy (Guitar / Synths), Rich Cash (Vocals), Pinstripe (Drums / Beats), Uber (Guitar) and Nuvo (Bass).

XX TEENS will go into the studio this Summer to record their debut album for Mute.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
