This record left Brian Doublehorrendous feeling ecstatic.
Cud were celebratory in the face of all the late 80s po face indie shamblers, completely at odds with the introverted leeds "indie" scene. They were the first real "underground" band i ever saw & the first time i ever got my pint knocked out of my hand by a rabid bunch of chubby flat top sporting moshers. They were a party band, funky, wonky & thrilling with a singer bearing the tonsils of a rock god, the unlikely charisma of a ginger, bespectacled lothario, a bass player with THE FUNK (& the looks), a cool as a cucumber drummer sporting a plastic bobbys helmet & a guitarist who just made red stripe my fave tipple for years he was so effortlessly blase in his casual axe hacking style. A stage invasion inneviatably ensued, they played the Duchess of York (RIP) 2 more times after that, leaving eager queues stretching round the block every time they announced a gig. They got banned before the Autumn this album came out as the pub was nearly demolished in the scrum of May 1989. Leeds best kept secret were scorned by the Manchester obsessed NME but were SO adored in West Yorkshire you felt like a million dollars evertime you bought their new record or attended one of their delightful extravaganzas. They are also a swell bunch of folk & Carl "vox god" Puttnam even took time to help a beleagured Phil pack records for the fledling Norman records back in the late 90s. This album still sounds as fresh, original, catchy & exhilarating as ever so just buy it & make them stars (again!) 10/10 Review date: 27 July 2007
What we say
This record left our Phil feeling ecstatic.
I don't get too excited about many things coming out these days but seeing as though I sold my Cud 'When In Rome, Kill Me' LP years ago (which I completely regret but one has to eat....) I was delighted to find out it's being reissued. Here it is now (alas CD only) bolstered with 8 previously unreleased tracks (Live bits and different versions). It's one of the finest indie albums ever released and you too can own it for cheapness with extra goodness....many many reason for it to be had by you. oh yes... Hearing Only A Prawn In Whitby again was a sheer delight... I saw 'em last year when they reformed and they rocked Brian's and my world.... Ah the joys of 'Bibi Couldn't See'....'Strange Kind Of Love...' Makes me feel like a kid again. Also out is Asquarius with bonus gubbins on 'n all but this one has all my favourite biscuits on.
What the label says:
Following on from last years phenomenally successful Anthology, Universal Music Catlaogue are proud to present the album that started the Mighty Cud Band on the road from art school to the front cover of the NME.
'When In Rome, Kill Me' was released in 1989. It was a concept album. It was unmastered. That was the Genius of Cud. Never ones to shy away from the unobvious, the album has become a cult classic (exchanging hands for upwards of £35.00) and is home to timeless tracks Only (A Prawn In Whitby), Strange Kind Of Love and I've Had It With Blondes, all have which have been thrilling live audiences again at sold out Cud gigs since the band reformed last summer.
The album has now been totally mastered for the first time, and remastered, and beefed up with a plethora of bonus material including 9 previously unreleased tracks in the form of radio sessions, demos and live recordings.
The package comes with sleevenotes from various players in this most extraordinary of debut albums.
