A 7" by The Heavy called Coleen on Counter records (which I am informed is a subsidiary of Ninja Tines). It's a strange sound to come out of Bath, England. It's got a retro party soul vibe with trumpets and delicate Princeseque vocals. It's even got the standard female gospel backing band to big up the chorus for good order. It all played in fine spirit for a loungy swinging party... not a real "swinging party" though.. that's just relationship wreckingThey are kings of a kind of (West) Country voodoo soul which mixes and matches Curtis Mayfield, RZA, HP Lovecraft, Stax, Led Zeppelin and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins into the kind of cauldron-melting potion which is utterly original, haunting, weird, sexy and unsettling all at once.·Hailing from the poor, insular and dark countryside which surrounds Bath, The Heavy sound both possessed and insinuating, a kind of stealthy wickedness which overflows from their debut album, ‘Great Vengeance & Furious Fire’. First, though, comes their single, ‘Coleen’.·Superficially, ‘Coleen’ sounds nearer to classic soul territory but there is a UK rawness to the sound, an edginess that makes it pure Heavy. The package is completed by ‘Easier’, a more laid-back, bluesy version of this band’s distinctive template. Digital-only lead track ‘That Kind Of Man’ is the perfect introduction to the Heavy’s unique sound - a furious hip soul stomper in which wall upon wall of guitar is rammed up against tight horn riffs and the remarkable vocals float above the melee.
