Boots Brown - Boots Brown

Boots Brown by Boots Brown

Ultra modern chamber jazz? Free music from heaven? Well, it’s hard to even describe this musical monster. In terms of temperature, you could say that it is cold and warm at the same time. Yes it is intellectual, but it’s also vulnerable and tenderly playful.

Boots Brown is a supergroup, consisting of four of the most interesting musicians in Sweden, maybe in the whole of Europe today! Reedist Mats Gustafsson is definetely one of the heavyweight saxophonists on this planet. Not only in the free jazz/improv world, but also in the more creative so-called rock field. He has made duo albums together with Jim O’Rourke, David Grubbs and Yoshimi (The Boredoms). Mats has also recorded and played live with Sonic Youth and noice maestro Merzbow. Besides his involvement with the garage jazz-act The Thing, Boots Brown is the only Scandinavian band Mats is a member of at this moment. One can really understand that after just a few tones of this remarkable body of sounds.

Johan Berthling is also one of the most creative musicians around. Member of electronica-act Tape, free jazz trio LSB and key musician in almost everything that Nicolai Dunger does. Johan is also a fantastic producer. Only for Slottet Records he has put magic in three very different projects! First out was Santa Maria’s critically acclaimed solo-debut. Which will soon be followed by two new Berthling productions: pop impressionists Idiot Kid, and a amazing meeting between japanese guitar wizard Tetuzi Akiyama and Gul 3. If that wasn’t enough, Johan is also one of two hard working owners of the record company Häpna!

However, Boots Brown would not be complete, and so original, without trumpeter Magnus Broo and guitarist David Stackenäs. Magnus comes from the the universe of jazz, playing in band such as Atomic, Peter Brötzmann Tentet and of course his own quartet, while David played with musicians like Ken Vandermark, Mats Gustafsson, Ass, Evan Parker and Jim O’Rourke.

Boots Brown make no sense, but they make the most sensible music right now!
