I wanted to quickly mention this Port O' Brien CD called The Wind & The Swell. We only got 1 in to check it out but it's great! The opener is just like the Akron/ Family and then it hangs around somewhere in between Vetiver with some early Bright Eyes'ness. The tunes are really strong though and it's well worth a listen if you fancy getting in on something before everyone else does!

DEBUT ALBUM FROM THIS YOUNG CALIFORNIAN BAND, (SUPPOSEDLY M. WARD'S FAVOURITE NEW BAND): REALLY GREAT SONGWRITING, SHOWCASING THE PARADOX BETWEEN THE BAND’S FEROCITY AND ITSTENDERNESS. THE MALE AND FEMALE VOCAL COUNTERPOINT AND THEURGENT RUSHES OF INSTRUMENTATION MID-SONG MEET WITH THE GENTLESTRUM OF ACOUSTIC GUITARS AND WISTFUL IMAGERY OF THE SEA.THESE SONGS PRESENT MUSIC AS A DOCUMENT OF EXPERIENCE,SHOT THROUGH WITH PATHOS, IMAGINATION, ENTHUSIASM,AND WARMTH.OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS, PORT O’BRIEN HASEVOLVED INTO A FULL FOUR-PIECE BAND, AND CURRENTLY PERFORMSALL AROUND CALIFORNIA. ONSTAGE, THEIR YOUTHFULVIGOR (THE AVERAGE AGE OF THE MEMBERS IS 21) COMPLEMENTSTHEIR FOLKISH SOUND IN A WAY THAT FEELS EXCITINGAND NEW, AS IF CAP’N JAZZ WERE TRANSLATING A SET OFWILL OLDHAM’S MOST APPROACHABLE MATERIAL.WITH A FLURRY OF ONLINE ATTENTION IN THE PAST COUPLEOF MONTHS, IT’S LIKELY THAT A YEAR FROM NOW THE NAMEPORT O’BRIEN WILL BE ON THE TIPS OF EVERYONE’S TONGUE. PLAYING BESTIVAL AND END OF THE ROAD FESTIVALS AT THE END OF OUR SUMMER. FOR FANS OF VETIVER, WILL OLDHAM, CRAZY HORSE, THE ARCADE FIRE.
