D'Astro - Records &; Milk It

Records &; Milk It by D'Astro

4...according to our on Thu 23 Aug, 2007.

D'astro I've never heard before. Possibly because Their 7" 'Records' on Run Of The Mill is their debut and I don't get out to many gigs in Leeds these days. 'Records' is a slightly unhinged post-punk / punk funk sounding track with scratchy guitars and solid bassline. 'Milk It' on the flip is a more uptempo, wonky ants in yer pants funky track with hyperactive vocals. A strong debut like and rather refreshing...

D’Astro live in Leeds and play noisy dance music with guitars and drums. Influences include The Fall, Chinese Stars, Wire and commercial hip-hop. The bass and drums are fat and groovy, the guitars thin and scratchy and the singing excited and sarcastic. There are no love songs, typical subjects include the joy of listening to records, arguments between father and son about drugs and how krautrock will one day take over popular culture. “We are not a rock band” says D. Millard, “ We are trying to make dancing music – ugly and stupid dancing music for sexy and clever people”. D’astro formed in 2004 and have so far played with Franz Ferdinand, Deerhoof, The Long Blondes, Jeffery Lewis and Bilge Pump. Run07 is D’Astro’s first release and contains live favourites ‘Records’ and ‘Milk It’. An album is planned for 2007. Reviewed in Diskant, Artrocker, Plan b, Sandman, Leeds music scene and Drowned in Sound.
