In the year 2000, Madlib began seriously to explore the sonic collision of classic jazz, funk and fusion with present-day hip-hop. He set to work with his Yesterday’s New Quintet, a combo of five esoteric jazz cats who were unheard of then and unseen even now. Today, all five ‘players’ – by now, obviously all alter-egos of Madlib himself – alongside a host of new incarnations showcase their talents on ‘Yesterday’s Universe’. Here he veers between tight, funky electric trios, widescreen soundtrack vibes and free astral jazz, plus much, much more.Special guests on this album include Azymuth legend Ivan Conti aka Mamão and Karriem Riggins, producer for the likes of Common, Slum Village and J Dilla. Madlib and Karriem will not only release a full-length jazz collaboration later this year, but one of the most anticipated Hip Hop albums of 2007: Supreme Team, a record which will see the two versatile performers trading beats and verses in much the same way as Madlib and Dilla did on their Jaylib project. ·Madlib’s jazz credentials are beyond doubt: born into a family of jazz musicians, tutored by Weldon Irvine and given the keys to the vaults of Blue Note for his 2003 project ‘Shades Of Blue’.
