What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Maggie feeling happy.

Here's a single by the Good Books with "Passchendaele" on Columbia. A drippy "nice" popsong which farts by until the end when it goes all crazy like The Beatles song "A Day in the Life". Track 2 and its all a bit melodramatic. Mingus is digging the political lyrics. Its ok with some interesting vocal lines and good loud production. Track 3 mixes up some arpeggiod synths with backward vocals making it a very simple guitar song tarted up like an East End harlot. On CD and 2x 7".

What the label says:

GoodBooks release a new single Passchendaele though Columbia Records on Monday 16th July. Passchendaele is taken from the band’s eagerly anticipated debut album Control, which is released two weeks later on July 30th. The single will be available on CD single, two  x 7 inch coloured vinyl and download. All Bonus songs are exclusive to this release.

Passchendaele, a quiet village in Belgium where one of the most intense battles of World War One was fought, relays a strong but peaceful story telling the tale of a father and son who both fought in the Great Wars.  The song concludes by questioning the fact that despite so many well-meaning slogans and resolutions, a whole century has passed and we are still engaged in bitter conflict around the world.

GoodBooks debut album Control was produced by Dan Grech-Marguerat, and recorded at RAK studios in London.

The band’s  remixing skills have been in great demand of late having remixed tracks  for The Maccabees, Hot Club de Paris, The Sunshine Underground, and Mystery Jets, GoodBooks  recent singles Leni and The Illness have been remixed by the likes of The Teenagers, Kissy Sell Out, Crystal Castles and  Lo Fi Fnk.

Having recently toured with the Maccabees, The Rakes and Hot Club De Paris they are currently on the road with The Sounds. They also play the Electric Gardens, Underage and Field Day Festivals during August along with a handful of smaller boutique festivals.

GoodBooks are: Max Cooke (vocals / guitar), Christopher Porter (vocals / bass), JP Duncan (keyboards), Leo von Bülow-Quirk (drums).

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
