This record left james lacey feeling happy.
I've got the album and have seen the band play, so I know a bit about Mr McSweeney...but although this song is great and really makes a change from the usual singer-songwriter stuff that gets radio 2 play, it's not exactly his usual style. Not a bad thing, of course, and shows that he's got real potential to diversify with his mood (which has to be said is generaly downbeat) But, I'm a big fan and if anyone likes Nick Cave, Tom Waits or Velvet Underground, then Neil McSweeney is a good modern Americana addition to your collection. To sum up, a very bold and emotionally intense debut. Review date: 25 June 2007
What we say
This record left our Phil feeling happy.
Here's a new 7" on Kids by Neil Mcsweeney called Postcards. He's some singer songwriter dude who makes a serious noise. The press release says Lou Reed crossed with Tracy Chapman and that's not a million miles away. Also we heard bits of Roy Orbison and loads of Bryan Ferry in his voice. The guitars build up in a very Lou Reed/ Velvets way to a roaring crescendo. Extremely miserable sounding yet uplifting.... but as the man clearly sounds like he's about be all depressed everywhere he gets my vote.
What the label says:
Sheffield’s Neil McSweeney will release his debut single ‘Postcards’ on 18 June through KIDS. The release, available on download and 7” backed with the track ‘My Design’, is KIDS’ first foray into the land of the singer-songwriter, and the latest in an ever-more impressive catalogue of releases which boasts alumni including iLiKETRAiNS, The WOMBATS, The Whip, Assembly Now and Paul Hartnoll.
‘Postcards’ showcases McSweeney’s extraordinarily powerful voice, a cross between Lou Reed and Tracy Chapman, over a maudlin yet uplifting backdrop with an emotional depth that recalls the quiet menace of The Bad Seeds. The track has had early plays from Zane Lowe (Radio 1), Dermot O’Leary (Radio 2), Jonathan Ross (Radio 2), XFM playlist and McSweeney has performed on Steve Lamacq’s BBC Radio 1 show.
McSweeney started writing his Americana-tinged, folksy solo material while teaching English in Italy, following the break-up of his first band, Faded. Upon returning to his native Sheffield, he continued to write songs inspired by the likes of Low and Papa M, and was invited to record some tracks by a local studio. McSweeney became a fixture on the local live circuit, with his intense, brooding live performances leading to him being (somewhat unfairly he feels) voted ‘Sheffielder Most Likely To kill Himself’ on one internet forum, and described as ‘the most miserable man alive’ on another.
