Not known for either their interest in press transparency or their sunny dispositions, The Silent League remained tight-lipped about their recent silent sabbatical. With several members having been spotted performing with Beirut, the Arcade Fire, Calexico, Brazillian Girls, etc., rumors of a breakup seemed plausible until, in February 2007 an unmixed record titled ‘Of Stars and Other Somebodies’ showed up on SIC’s doorstep.Expanding on their debut’s 70’s-era soft-rock blueprint, channeling the density and energy that were hallmarks of the live shows, and also burrowing more deeply into the arcane, lush and neon edges of their collective roots, the soon to be released ‘Of Stars…’ shuns any shred of mere ornamentation, the bowed saws, brass band, woodwind and string ensemble, vintage synthesizers, antique tack pianos, laptop electronics, organs and accordions, children’s choirs, tape machines, electric guitars, pounding timpanis and glockenspiels are deeply purposeful, engaging; they are most likely in league with something unholy. Recorded at the Clubhouse in the creepy, storied mountains of upstate New York with Daniel Goodwin, the record was mixed primarily by producer Charlie Francis (REM, High Llamas, Robyn Hitchcock, Kaiser Chiefs, Will Oldham, Minus 5 with Wilco).
