Shannon Wright
Let In The Light

This record left our Phil feeling happy.
There was a time when I was obsessed by Shannon Wright. 'Dyed In The Wool' is one of the best albums I've heard... so much passion in there it's untrue. Her last album didn't really do much for me but the collab she did with Yann Tiersen was stunning. Anyway let In The Light has just arrived and on first listen it sounds great. It seems to have some of the passion and intensity of 'Dyed In The Wool' without the Albini production. It's all got a sea faring/ nautical kind of feel to it.... A lot of her albums have that you know. There's lots of nice tinkly piano , some kick ass guitars and drums too and I reckon if you're a fan of PJ Harvey you'd like this. Excellent stuff!! On Vicious Circle records.

What their label says...
Shannon Wright is a powerhouse singer-songwriter from Atlanta, Georgia. She’s no coffee shop strummer, singing sad pretty lyrics over her favorite C and G chords. No, not that. She’s feeling something. She’s burning. There’s an intensity to her music that can move you to joy, tears, or terror. Such an honest portrayal of emotion leaves you wondering if you are actually meant to hear it, almost as if you stumbled upon a sibling’s diary and can’t help but read it--even though you know you shouldn’t.
From her earlier and more gentle work Flight Safety (1998), to the vocally aggressive Dyed in the Wool (2001), Shannon has done an amazing amount of growth as a singer, songwriter, pianist and guitar player. Her last LP, Over the Sun, stands as a document of those fully realized capabilities. Recorded with Steve Albini in Chicago at the end of 2003, these songs sound enormous, and the immediacy of the recording puts the listener closer to her than ever before. Over the Sun pours out of the speakers like Shannon is playing right there in your living room, belting out these songs from 10 feet away.
With a new record from Shannon due out in the first half of 2007, watch out for her to bust through any previous expectations, as well as your favorite headphones.
