What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Mingus Rude feeling ecstatic.

And the other hand, Serafina Steer's "Cheap Demo Bad Science" (Static Caravan) starts out with a version of Brian Eno's "By This River" and despite endless comparisons in the office (mainly from head honcho Mr Phil) to Joanna Newsom, our Serafina is nowhere near as challenging in the voice department, although she does play harp and sings in the folk vernacular. And what a beautiful voice, rounded with range, a breathy undertow and a childlike playfulness (not like Ms Newsom). Although containing a melancholic strain, there's a hint of humor especially in the basis of the overheard conversation that informs "Council Flat" on track nine. Eleven tracks good including an animated featurette by Sam Steer of track three; "Tiger", traces of agit-prop and some fine observational pieces on the personal and the political. Any other week this would probably be album of the week. There's life left yet in the so-called folk revival. Come and break some hearts in Leeds.

What the label says:

From the very first track of Sefa’s debut, a stunning cover of Eno’s ‘by this river’ Serafina Steer (Sefa) has burst the Caravan doors wide open with this Raincoats meet Laurie Anderson  feast of audio protein. Serafina Steer plays the harp and keyboards, has been compared to Ivor Cutler, Joanna Newsom and The Flying Lizards. Her previous release Peach Heart was single of the week at Piccadilly Records and received played on Radio3's Mixing it and Late Junction; Radio 2 and  Radio 1. A Student of Trinity College of Music and Chethams School of Music, before spending a  summer being harpist in residence at  Dartington International  summer school on a collaborative new ensemble piece with Indian and English  musicians under Ravi Shankar  and playing in a new ballet  at Covent garden ('Ghosts' by Cathy Marston and Dave Maric). Looking for inspiration their was a period in a silent retreat before composing the music to  Cheap Demo Bad Science  using the Schillinger System of Orchestration. The album was then recorded in various locations around London. From a disused east end public house to an abandoned house in the middle of a roundabout. All these studio spaces are now due to be demolished.  ‘Cheap Demo Bad Science’ is  co-produced by Mike Lindsey of Tunng and Capitol K. A Whacky Races, ‘slag brothers rock and gravel’ to Sefa’s Penelope Pit Stop.Serafina has played or recorded with a wide range of artists from Tunng, king creosote , cibelle, benge, capitol K,  memory band,  leafcutter john, james yorkston, adem, they came from the stars i saw them. Recent shows a combination of headline slots; aftershow parties; ‘events’ and significant support slots with the likes of Fionn Reagan have led to  shows in Glasgow, Oslo, Tokyo and the Supersonic Festival in coming months. Oh! and did we forget to tell you that the CD features an animation for Tiger. Well it does. For fans of Tunng, Joanna Newsom, Laurie Anderson, Brian Eno and Kate Bush.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
