What we say about A Hat, by Souvaris

Rating: happy This record left our Phil feeling happy.

Onto Souvaris who have a new album out on Gringo Records. Souvaris are one of the better post rock bands to have emerged over the years and their new album (fantastically titled A Hat). Being a baldy I love hats... not cos I'm ashamed of my baldness. Oh contraire reader.... more of a case of it's fricking cold without one. Anyhoo this new Souvaris album sees them treading familiar territory of quiet, loud, jerky sounding clever post rock music. It's very all over the place but wickedly coherent at the same time. A charming talent you'll find. At times there's a slight shoegazey feel so you can hear bits of Explosions in there (without the pomp) but there's lots of jerky big clever things going on all held together by some complicated syncopated drumming. Talented bunch of guys these and I bet they're total slayer live.

What the label says about A Hat, by Souvaris:

“[Souvaris are] a lovely breath of fresh air for a genre that often feels exceedingly stagnant […] it takes time to unravel the arrangements that Souvarisa have created but it’s a rewarding experience.” – Splendidzine. “A Hat” is the second album by Souvaris via Gringo Records - the result of over three years of writing and mastering, “A Hat” is a progression from their previous album, “I Felt Nothing At All” (2005) developing a new sound and a new approach which has been described as an amalgamation of the krautrock motorik of Neu! and Can, with the grooves of Tortoise and Battles, and the odd Yo La Tengo or Bedhead- esque pop hook. The band will be on tour in May including a show as part of their label, Gringo’s 10th Anniversary party alongside Part Chimp, Lords, Bilge Pump, Designer  Babies, Hey Colossus and more at the Art Organisation on the 9th June. Adding wandering chords and ambient washes to their now tight grooves, intricate rhythms and playful melodies, the band - Aaron Doyle, Dan Layton, John Simson, David Stockwell and Ian Whitehead - have played countless shows over the six years they’ve been together, with luminaries such as Explosions in the Sky, The Shipping News, Matt Elliot and Fly Pan Am. Live,  Souvaris deliver a show that is as entertaining as it is subtle, direct as it is layered.
