Mingus Rude here this week with a pile of audio supplements for the weekend and the rest of your life. First up is the third lp installment from Dizzie Rascal: "Maths & English" (XL) in which he makes an attempt to escape his grime background. Making a stance with old school hip hop references, beats and rhyme styles as on the single "Sirens". More hip hop than grime with additional production from Cage, Futurecuts and Jungle don Shy FX on track 8, the lyrics are the usual self referencing worldview on the music industry, drugs, cash, girls. Of interest to all you indie kids is the Arctic Monkeys sample on "Temptation", a Lily Allen collaboration on "Wannabe" styled on the Bugsy Malone musical, still there's humour aplenty in their dissection of wannabe gangsterism.
I'm comin' back at yer now I've survived the onslaught that is the both the Wiley and Dizzie lp's, phew! things sound proper heavy in the world of grime. The word is Wiley sticks to his roots and his background in Grime life-check out the sub Garage licks on "Playtime is Over" (Big Dada). Meaning, he's still in London whilst Dizzie get's (to Kent allegedly) out to escape beef, reinventing himself with more of a rap- hip hop stance, nifty collaborations, pop and James Brown breaks.
