What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Phil feeling ecstatic.

Someone else I've never really got is Scout Niblett. I really tried desperately hard to like this woman and gave up on the premise that I've got better things to do like eat and go to the lavvy as much as physically possible. There's only so much whining I can take in one day and as a rule, and one whole Scout Niblett song is around one and a half days worth of my whining tolerance quota. I rarely get to the end of a song. I was drawn to the incredible sleeve which is possibly the best record sleeve I've ever seen. It's a grinning ginger kid with a huge mouth and nose looking super uber geekish wearing a bright red jumper which clashes with the grim shackleton's armchair. It's a fantastic photo! Musically it sounds a bit like Regina Spektor doing an acoustic Police song. I keep half expecting Sting to jump in and bang on about whales. This woman whines a lot and this is (unsurprisingly) very whiny sounding... However (and rather bizarrely) I shall admit to liking this as it's a really good tune.... She sounds like Mirah funnily enough. The best thing I've heard by her in ages. Lovely. Oh it's called Just Do It/ Dinosaur egg featuring lyrics but David nutter Shrigley

What the label says:

Lyrics from the lead track ‘Dinosaur Egg’ were taken from the imaginary album ‘Worried Noodles’ by the artist David Shrigley (www.davidshrigley.com) and brought to life as a song with Scout’s vocal melodies and minimal fingerpicked guitar.   ·Another Shrigley poem was transformed into song in the same session, which will be included on the forthcoming ‘Worried Noodles’ album in which an array of different musicians were asked to submit songs using Shrigley’s poems.     ·The EP also includes a stripped down cover of the Cars track ‘Just What I Needed’, and the self affirming lines that make up a live favourite of recent years ‘Just Do It’.   ·Scout Niblett begins recording her new album with Steve Albini in April for a release later in the year.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
