Rating: ecstatic This record left Tom feeling ecstatic.

If ever there was a catchy, poppy, 3-minute summer single, this is it. The vocals are well balanced between the male singer's Malkmus-esque tones, and the female's ever-so-catchy 'ba ba ba ba' hook line.

The B-side shows an extra level of depth that appeals beyond pure pop sensibilities, and hints that there may be more good tunes to come from this band.

What we say

Rating: unmoved This record left our Maggie feeling unmoved.

Here's Sad Captains with another summer pop tune with dead pan vocals backed by female ooos and ahhhhs . Here come the hand claps!! b side is a nice enough male/ female duet with pop sensibilities. Good use of wonky cow bell and some unusual sounds which saves it from being a head in the oven job... just

What the label says:

Fans of melodic pop music rejoice, the debut single from My Sad Captains takes the country-tinged American sounds of Sparklehorse and Wilco and lends them a sparkling, harmony-rich pop edge. Recorded by Dan Lea (By The Fireside, M Craft) at his Golden Hum studio and subsequently mixed by Paul Hollingworth (586) and mastered at Abbey Road, “Bad Decisions” pitches singer Ed Wallis’ languid delivery against Cathy Lucas’ insanely infectious “Ba-Ba-Ba-Da”s for what could well be this summer’s indie underground smash. Not only that, but if you check out the luscious B-side “Here And Elsewhere” you’ll discover it’s merely by dint of BPMs that it’s not the lead track here, the boy-girl vocals intertwining to create a rare fragility. Based in Camden, and named after a poem by Thom Gunn.  The band have recently recorded a version of “Hundreds Of Sparrows” for inclusion on the forthcoming Sparklehorse tribute album.
Thoroughly unpretentious, My Sad Captains’ pop sensibilities are a welcome respite from the legions of Clash tribute bands in tight jeans clogging up the capital. “Bad Decisions” is just the first of many simple, magical pleasures to come. ''Like calexico's poppier cousins...genuinely tuneful country tinged songs… one of the capital's best kept secrets' (The Fly)

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
