What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Mingus feeling happy.

Battles: "Mirrored" debut long player for Warp is finally out. A fine live proposition, recorded, their sound is only slightly more contained. The dynamic is a play-off between the pulverising polyrhythmic percussion and the melodic interplay of the munchkin vocals, keyboards, guitars & effects. At times seeming to contain elements and influences from Progressive rock, Jazz-fusion and Ethno (say African Hi life or Brazilian batacuda, the diversity of their experimentation seems to know no bounds. Ok, the vocals may sometimes grate but overall their sound is grounded in a kind of heavy, funky grind. Ant sums it up best, describing their sound as an articulation of a heavy rock band recreating the sounds of the best left-field electronica.

What the label says:

Recent Guardian Guide Single Of The Week-ers Battles release their hugely anticipated debut album proper. Prepare to be dazzled by what some are already hailing as the album of the year.   Battles are gods, superheroes sent to save us from musical mediocrity and ‘Mirrored’ is a colossal masterpiece begging to join your record collection.   The preceding single, ‘Atlas’, has been receiving some giddy coverage both online & in the press with full marks everywhere (including an unprecedented 10/10 from Drowned In Sound) as well as   ‘Mirrored’ is available on CD (initial quantities in gatefold wallet packaging with A3 poster) and limited edition double vinyl (again, featuring a free poster).

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
