Lastly is Met Fly's; "Wiggin Out" is a twelve track set containing downtempo beats and rhyme flows styled on Cypress Hill. For those that like their Hip-Hop head-nodding and some what blunted. Lo-fi production values combine with a considered balancing of vocals and instrumentation. I've not had time to check the lyrics 100% so I can't really pinpoint where they're coming from, that said there's not too much slackness but as-per Rap there's plenty of boasting.Met Fly is a mc from Los Angeles. Oh and his voice is the lowest from the left coast, hands down.
He shared stage and been affiliated with some of the finest crews out there, the cult Shapeshifters and the less-known but probably equally important Westcoast Workforce. Besides Wiggin Out he released another solo album, The Legacy on his own Fly Paper imprint, got one 7" on Sublevel Epidemic and several guests appearances on major westcoast underground albums from the La2thebay family. He also got an album with his two groups, Overfiends' "Motel California" with fellow mc Existereo (Shapeshifters/ Candy's 22/ Institubes, etc) and "Catching Up To Wilt" with newly-Interscope-signed-soon-pop-superstar Mickey Avalon and Dirt Nasty as the Dyslexic Speedreaders.
Paris Zax is one of the most underrated hip hop producer from the westcoast, the responsible of Busdriver's 'Imaginary Places' and a tons of other westcoast hh legends, Shapeshifters include. He has been signed by fellow producer Daddy Kev on Alpha Pup Records and released his first solo effort "Unpathd Waters" as the first release of the label. He produced entirely Wiggin Out.
Existereo and Mickey Avalon are the guests on a couple of cuts for this album also. Exist is the best white trash punkrocker mc ever and has also been involved in an endless list of albums and appearances with his mates from the Shapeshifters crew. He's currently involved in groups Overfiends with Met, Candy's 22 with Barfly, WhyKnows with Innaspace... and got an album produced by parisian producers Para One and Tacteel for the parisian label Institubes. Mickey Avalon is a the best white trash glamrock mc ever and just signed on major label Interscope, after his self titled debut release has been one of the most hyped thing of 2006. Funny fact bout Mickey : he's credited as "The Relevant" on the original cd version of Wiggin Out but decided to change his name for this vinyl re-release. It was way before the Interscope thing.
Mear One is a renowned graff artist from L.A.. He did several album artworks, like Daddy Kev's Lost Angels EP or Mike Nardone's We Came From Beyond compilation to name a few. He did W.O. front cover drawing.
The Project:
I got a huge list of underrated/confidential but essential westcoast albums to release on vinyl before my death and Wiggin Out was the first on my list.
It has the very distinctive sound of that golden era of La2thebay/Shifters affiliated albums, very well-crafted and non-linear instrumentals with funk, soul, jazz samples and heavy beats, kind of Daddy Kev or Omid at their best, the ultra low voice and agressive tone of Met counterparted by the nonchalant delivery of Mickey Avalon and the best white double time rapper alive, Exist. Most of all, it got that feeling of actually being there, you can easily picture yourself walking in the streets of LA, chilling through the huge palm trees, with a beautiful sunset in your back while listening to this album. I love it.
What Met has to say about his album:
Wiggin Out is the first album I released in 2000. At the time I thought it would probably be the last. I had no idea what direction I was going to go with my life, career or even with my music. I figured if I only make one album to define me, I'm going to make it the best I possibly can. I was only 22 years old at the time, in 1997. We began recording Wiggin Out between 1997-1999 at Paris Zax's studio in Hollywood, California on his 12 track. Although not the best quality recordings, we knew we had something.
At the end of 1999 Daddy Kev and Mear One layed out the cover artwork and metfly.com was launched. Re-recorded professionally in Burbank, California mixed and mastered by Scotty The Technician, on Sept 5th 2000 Wiggin Out was released worldwide available on cd only. Now, over 4 years later, the long awaited original version is re-released on vinyl.
Wiggin Out features guest appearances by The Relevant (Mickey Avalon) and Existereo of the Shapeshifters. Influenced by all forms of hip hop, punk, metal, jazz, blues and whatever drugs we could get our hands on, the music we made was raw. The one thing that I did then that I always do now is make the music for myself. Don't even conform because you think that's what people want to hear.
