The Loungs - We Are The Champ

We Are The Champ by The Loungs

4...according to our on Thu 17 May, 2007.

Now The Loungs with their new album We Are The Champ out on Akoustik Anarkhy Recordings. Sprouting from St Helens they've got a style than never strays far from melody. It appears that they're an all singing 6 piece and have created some big harmonies over simple poppy music. Each bar has been painstakingly fussed over and its not without its Magic Numbers, Bees, Chas and Dave and The Housemartins sounding moments. The big choir sounding chorus's make it sound Celtic at times too. They'd be a a good festival band and I note they're playing Glastonbury

‘We Are The Champ’ is the debut album from The Loungs. A six piece band-cum-gang, The Loungs produce
kaleidoscopic pop, peppered with trumpets, time changes,made-up words and catchy, sing-along choruses, File next to Super Furry Animals, The Beta Band, ELO and late 60’s psych greats Nilsson, Sagittarius & TheLeft Banke.
Typical of the ambition and creativity of the aA label roster, the band produced the album themselves. Recorded at St Helen’s Catalyst Studio, they set about a voyage of musical discovery using anything and everything at their fingertips - listen carefully to ‘Electric Lights’ and you might just hear the sound of the studio’s radiator, which was
appropriated as a percussion instrument. Not settling for keyboard strings they brought in a string quartet which offsets their retro-synths and shanty choruses perfectly.
Clearly, the experiments reaped rich rewards - this is a fine, ambitious and fully realised debut.
LP limited to 500.
