What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Phil feeling happy.

The Lodger's debut album is released now. Here it is in fact. Grown Up's is CD only (shame) and it's 100% complete unashamed pop. It's not really my kind of thing these days but I really like this for some reason. It's great catchy indie pop music which harks back to the old days before style and fashion took over. There's bits of Ash, Lightning Seeds, Wedding Present in it and they remind me of New Rhodes with their approach to simple catchy pop fun. It sounds like the kind of record which could have been made 15-20 years ago. Quality!

What the label says:

Angular Recording Corporation is proud to present to you ’Grown-Ups’, the debut album from Leeds based three-piece The Lodger.
The Lodger was born in Ben Siddall’s Leeds bedsit flat in 2004. As the new year began, Dance to the Radio issued their debut single by the band ‘Many Thanks For Your Honest Opinion’. A further limited 7" single ‘Watching’ was issued as the year drew to a close.
2006 was where the band got their act together - a permanent line-up of Ben, Joe and Katie was established and the band went out on the road in the UK with kindred Yorkshire spirits The Research in February. London indie label Angular Records released the band’s third single ‘Let Her Go’  shortly afterwards. This single won the BBC 6music’s Rebel Playlist and started to pick up airplay worldwide.
In the summer the band decamped to Alan Smyth’s tiny Sheffield recording studio to record songs for their debut album. 13 tracks were recorded in a week in September and the result is ‘Grown-Ups’. The album was completed
with a track recorded with James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco. This material was road-tested as main support on The Long Blondes tour in Feb 2007.
What the press have said :
- ART ROCKER: "A combination of edgy guitars and the wonderfully light voice of singer Ben, fused together by perky percussion put Kicking Sand head and shoulders above most indie-pop floating around at the moment."
- SOUNDSXP: "They produce gloriously simple but sublime, twisted pop songs."
- MANCHESTER MUSIC: "It’s not just a good song, but it’s also a thoroughly relevant updating of northern indie without any of the hyperbole normally attached via music pressreviews and all the other kinds of haircut flavoured fever. Single of the Week."
- LEEDS GUIDE: "It sounds like a British pop classic."

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.

'when there was crab there was harmony.'
