What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Ant feeling happy.

Following the 'Virtual' 12" and Book Of Dogma 2CD, Soma do the do and re-issue The Black Dog's 'Techno Playtime' on wax. For you seasoned doggers(!) this will need no introduction. Classic early 90's breakbeat techno which layed the foundations for the wave of so called IDM that was to follow. Indeed Apt, Chiba, It Felt Like It, Seers and Sages and Dog solitude are all included. Seminal is the word here. The originals were going for mad crazy money. I remember hearing that they pressed up 1000 and the distro cocked up and melted 500. The nuggets. That could all be total bullshit though. Possibly the most essential 12" since the platinum elite diamond rampant rabbit maxi turbo thruster.

What the label says:

The Black Dog’s classic EP ‘Techno Playtime’ is brought back to vinyl, digitally remastered for the first time since the rare 1990 original. Soma have  recently brought back this early pre-Warp material digitally remastered on double CD to great applause from technoheads old and new. ‘Book of Dogma’ is a complete history lesson in electronic music, essential listening for anyone remotely interested in the evolution of UK electronica. To compliment this, Soma are also re-releasing the act’s first 3 EPs. 1989’s debut EP, ‘Virtual’, was revived on 12” and released alongside the album. The group’s second ever EP, ‘Techno Playtime’, is now ready for similar treatment. Remastered to perfection, this six-tracker is at home on the biggest of soundsystems and is eagerly waiting to be unleashed onto new crowds. From the innocuous playfulness of the title track, ‘Techno Playtime’, and ‘Seers & Sages’ to the dark, brooding ‘It Felt Like It’, through the jazzy grooves of ‘Apt’ this shows all sides of The Black Dog. Tracklisting: Techno Playtime * Apt * Chiba * It Felt Like It *Seers &  Sages * Dog Solitude

About the humble 12":

The 12" is the big brother of records as it's an fatter version of the 7", with a vast scope for an array of remixes and B sides. They are slightly less portable their smaller inched brethren but they're by no means inferior. Often the grooves are spaced wider apart and thus sound much much better. You can fit ample tracks on and if worse comes to worse they make fine plates (should your crockery go awol). Yes, there's a hole but holes are easy to sort out. Once again they're available on many different colours and guises. The best thing about a 12" is the potential vastness of the artwork. Also playable on many speeds!!

'blame it on the dog why don't you'
