A new split 7" release on Akoustik Anarkhy sees Islands Lost at Sea pitted against Softpriest. ILAS's debut "The way we played it yesterday" is synthetically backed experiment in feedback guitar noise with a breakdown that utilises what sounds like finger pianos and a kazoo. An ecelectic approach like that should make the long player an interesting listen if not for the juxtaposition of sounds but wether they can keep it together like the structure of this first missive. Softpriest, meanwhile go for some wigged out psuedo TV soundtrack vibe. "Study Bunk Breakout" has wavering key lines pitted against a folksy jig/reel type swirl that defies the oft used format for electronica.New additions to the aA label, the Islands Lost at Sea have produced a debut 7" that is as genuine as it is original and a fine example of pure unspoiled Northern lo-fi pop.
‘The Way We Played It Yesterday’ is a bassline-driven, skippy amalgamation of processed instrumentation, kazoo harmonies and squally guitars. One Part early Beta Band, a smattering of the toytown folksy aspects of Eureka period Jim O Rourke and with a nod to the more adventurous outings of Stereolab, (if Ry Cooder had been in the band, that is). Band members Dan, Adam and Bodge are amassing an impressive collection of tunes covering many genres - Electronica, acoustic balladry, Hawaiian folk music, twisted blues. and this track serves as an introduction to what will undoubtedly be a fruitful year.
On the flip-side, the Soft Priest follows up his debut ’Done It!’ EP another scolding damaged-rave electronica as he describes himself - "The main ’chorus’ of Study Bunk Breakout sounds like The Archers theme if it was made on synths by a retarded child with terrible skin and a pink mist for his right hand. It stumbles along, voiceless like a drunken tart,
melodic yes, but with an implausibly damaged rhythm."
