Oxbow - The Narcotic Story

The Narcotic Story by Oxbow

4...according to our on Wed 21 May, 2008.

Here's another slab of hellish, bluesy rock from Eugene 'Man Mountain' Robinson and crew to brighten up your day, they always put me a little bit in mind of the slower stuff Black Flag were doing in their later years or maybe even someone like Lead Belly gone horribly, horribly wrong. It's full of great riffs as usual, often layered around and on top of insistent piano and strings that generally sound about as melancholic as you could possibly imagine but occasionally quite triumphant too. God only knows what he's groaning/howling about half the time but it definitely doesn't sound like the happy stuff. I'm tempted to say someone should give him a cuddle but I wouldn't want to be the one responsible for the loss of their teeth. Now also on vinyl!

After blotting out the sun with last year's CD+DVD compilation, Love That¹s Last: A Wholly Hypnographic and Disturbing Work Regarding Oxbow, our boys besmeared the Record Plant in San Francisco with Grammy-winning producer Joe Chiccarelli (The Raconteurs, Frank Zappa, American Music Club) in tow and emerged with The Narcotic Story, possibly the finest fucking album of Oxbow¹s 10,000-year career. In fact, we're gonna go with the word masterpiece here.: On The Narcotic Story, Dan Adams (bass), Greg Davis (drums) and Niko Wenner (guitar/organ) unfurl the quiet and creepy and desperate and successfully deconstructed in a kind of ominous/strident/triumphant rock (yeah, we said it) that expresses, in no uncertain terms, the fact that Oxbow do not fuck around. Eugene describes it as "a disturbing stroll through a place where everything's broken," but to us, it¹s more like a terrifying sprint from the very real prospect of severe bodily harm inflicted by some omniscient & immutable force. We¹re still not sure why Eugene insists on removing his pants onstage‹or why approximately 15% of Oxbow shows end in fistfights, but we're kinda like you in that respect: We¹ve got a lot to learn.
