-    Tarwater’s second full-length for the influential Morr Music imprint following the acclaimed ‘The Needle is Travelling’

Tarwater is the long-running project of German musicians Bernd Jestram and Ronald Lippok (of To Rococo Rot), together they have produced a wealth of material and ‘Spider Smile’ is their sixth full-length, their second for the Morr Music imprint. With their last, ‘The Needle is Travelling’ they found a way to hotwire their distinctive electronic sound and produce skewed alternative pop, a transition which is continued and propelled forward with ‘Spider Smile’. The duo have always had a firm grounding in Berlin’s electro and avant-garde scene, and although they are experimenting with poppier songs and structures, the avant-garde presence is still noticeable, most obviously in the album’s opener ‘Shirly Temple’. A downtempo slice of sleazy electronic rock music, this could be The Velvet Underground re-interpreted by Neu! and is the perfect opener to this diverse record. Before long we are greeted by Ronald Lippok’s familiar vocal tones with the upbeat ‘World of things to Touch’ and the album is truly in its stride. Noticable is the band’s inclusion of acoustic instruments this time around; mouth organ, violin, oboe and banjo are all evident and nestled amongst the more familiar glitchy electronic landscapes. Clipped glitchy drums are placed next to acoustic percussive sounds and analogue synthesizers next to acoustic bass, and the result is truly explosive. This could be the band’s most forward thinking collection of work so far, and is without a doubt the album with the most potential for crossover success. Blending the finest elements of the Berlin scene with something altogether more contemporary they have come up with a winning formula and one that should be enjoyed by the masses.
