What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Ant feeling happy.

Our Maggie is the queen of celebrity sex scandals. She's just informed us that Princess Di did the beast with two backs with Bryan Adams. I'm shocked. 'Everything I Do, I Do It for you' Indeed. The cheeky monkey. Imagine doing the nasty with a princess eh. 'Oooooh your highness!!! Back to the task in hand which is to review the new Electrelane 'No Shout No Calls'album. After 2 minutes I can't believe how much this sounds like Stereolab. Phil says it sounds a bit like Saloon (at times... P x) . This is very 'classic' early Too Pure sounding. Quality indie pop. Initial copies come with a free sew on patch. They used to be cool in the 80's so did fluorescent socks and leg warmers.

What the label says:

‘No Shouts, No Calls’ is alive with Electrelane’s signature impassioned organ melodies, primal drum beats, rhythmic bass and weaving guitar riffs, but there’s an underlying softness present. Where the last album ‘Axes’ offered edge and experimentation and ‘The Power Out’ before it being Electrelane’s first vocal offering, where lyrics wavered over cinematic soundscapes, ‘No Shouts, No Calls’ is a collection of eleven, strong, infectious and individual songs.    From the emotive opening lyrics of ‘The Greater Times’, “You say you don’t know what love means anymore. Since I found you I’m tearing down the walls” – it’s clear that ‘No Shouts, No Calls’ is a personal album, and one capturing Electrelane’s positive mood, pouring it into hauntingly beautiful songs which blend hypnotic intensity with a near jaunty pop aesthetic to perfection.   From the indie rock guitar riff of ‘After The Call’, to the gentle organ melody and serenely tender vocals of ‘At Sea’, through to the clashed metallic guitar and drum duel of ‘Between The Wolf And The Dog’ and the sultry modern love ditty that is ‘Cut And Run’, followed by the spiralling piano beauty of ‘The Lighthouse’, each track stands in isolation, both exciting and powerful, while collectively they fit and flow together.Electrelane’s most diverse and accessible album to date.

About the humble LP:

The LP is the daddy of formats. 12" inches of sheer joy. The LP adds to the glory of the 12" record as it can be played at a slower speed (33rpm instead of the usual 45rpm for singles), consequently more musical joy can be had. Played on a decent deck the sound of an LP is about a million times better than any other format. They look fantastic...... a nice gatefold sleeve with a information rich inner sleeve will keep you entertained for hours even before your stylus has chance to make eye contact with it's 12" prey. An essential part of musical heritage which will never be forgotten. It still does play at a multitude of speeds but as it's recorded to be played slower they normally sound ridiculous sped up. Though double albums can make up for this slight inadequacy by ramming more tunes into your ears for your money. Utterly essential.
