This is nice... it's Death Vessel. and its a pretty female voice in front of country slide guitar. She sounds a bit like chilled out Dolly Parton and Laura Viers after sinus treatment. (turns out its Laura and Meg Baird of Espers) All very up beat with some coconut percussion clipping along to the wonderfully plucked acoustic guitar. Not sure about the geezer doing the harmonies cluttering it all up as men often do. (turns out its his band!!) Track 3 and we've got some electric guitar and its sparse, celtic and moody. Sometimes they are too country and barn yard for me but I'm really feeling this album especially its stranger moments that use the space. Some really nice tunes when he keeps his nose out. Folk for all you folk.*After the success of their last release , Deerhoof's `Friend Opportunity',
the ATP label looks like it's onto another winner with this new album
from Death Vessel.
*Sub Pop liked this album so much they have already signed up Death Vessel for
the U.S. Laura and Meg Baird of Espers sing on the album. Death Vessel will
also be supporting Low on their April/May 2007 European Tour (see dates
below).
*Death Vessel is the name of Joel Thibodeau's new work as both a solo artist
and band leader. Thibodeau's vocal delivery is astonishing. Perhaps his vocal
style could be best described as descendent from "the high lonesome sound" -
unleashed upon the world by Roscoe Holcomb in the early 1960's.
*With this voice, Death Vessel delivers stunning lyrical poetry that transcends
the "whisky 'n' haystack" imagery of its neo-folk contemporaries. Thibodeau
brings this same unusual experimentation to the acoustic guitar (his primary
instrument). The daringly melodic plucking of strings and the odd tempo
changes provide expertly unexpected accompaniment.
*Two Death Vessel tracks from Stay Close were included on the recent ATP
compilation which was given out to all 6000 attendees of ATP and included
on the December Plan B as a covermount.
*Gatefold Lp limited to 500 only.
*Tracklisting: Mean Streak, Later in Life Lift, Blowing Cave, Break in
the Empress Crown , Nothing Left to Bury , Mandan Dink, Tidy Nervous
Breakdown , Snow Don't Fall , Deep in the Horchata, White Mole

um. The review below by maggie has to be a joke and if not I hope she doesn't work for this site. She should do just a tad bit of research. Somehow she managed to miss that joel, the artist that is death vessel is a male and he is the one doing all the vocals. I know he sounds like a girl but it is a guy. Its just too funny because she says she doesn't like his backing vocals(which most of the time are the only vocals on the album that aren't him) but that men tend to clutter it up. Then proceeds to conclude it saying its great when he keeps his nose out of it. Is this girl really this stupid. Look it up. Death vessel is all Joel, especially the vocals. This site should be a bit embarrassed....according to wolf.
Deceptively easy going; before you know it,
it unravels into a truly heart-felt vision of post america, embodying canyons, desert scapes, harmonies, friends, isolation, banjo,i recommend a listen. wolf XRating: 4 out of 5So, what do you think? Best reviewer each month gets £10 off their next order!
