Gallon Drunk's early pulverizing rock and roll gigs in North London set the band far apart from the prevailing trends of the day (Shoegazing, Grunge and Madchester) and drew rapturous plaudits from critics and fans alike. Among those who witnessed and appreciated Gallon Drunk's barn-storming blitzkrieg performances were Nick Cave, Shane McGowan, PJ Harvey, Morrissey and Mark E. Smith who, along with John Peel, are on record saying how much they liked the band. Gallon Drunk's unique brand of sleazy, stripped down rock & roll clearly inspired the likes of PJ Harvey, Yeah Yeah Yeah's and Jon Spencer. The third album in the set, From the heart of town, received rave reviews upon release in 1993 and saw the band define the sound that had developed over the previous two years. The LP contains many of Gallon Drunk’s most beloved tracks, such as Jake on the make and Arlington Road and now comes with eight additional tracks including the B-sides originally released with the classic singles, Bedlam and You should be ashamed. These include the group’s unique take on such unlikely gems as Neil Sedaka’s Solitaire, and Merle Haggard classic, Silver Wings. Also included are 4 live tracks recorded on the Morrissey support tour of America (recorded at the Hollywood Bowl & Madison Square Gardens), three of which were originally available as a limited edition EP with “From the heart of town, the fourth being previously unreleased. |
