JACK PENATE is a bit all over the place at the mo. You can't move for him. His new single Spit At Stars is a jaunty affair which reminds me of Jamie T,. Billy Brag and some old style jangly indie pop music. Nowt new or exciting if you ask me.... heard it all before....Jack seems destined for big things this year – his pop sensibilities and remarkable song craft have already got him noticed – his energetic gigs are always rammed, his MySpace page is among the most visited on there and, most recently, he’s cropped up in virtually everybody’s ‘Ones To Watch In 2007’ poll.
His first single, ‘Second, Minute Or Hour’, was released on the respected Young Turks label late last year and sold out in a morning. Although limited to only 500 on vinyl (each copy also came with an original Polaroid of Jack), it quickly became more than an indie curiosity, with both Jo Whiley making it Single Of The Week and Zane Lowe playing it twenty times within a month of release. This self-produced EP (engineered by Cenzo Townsend) features no fewer than five tracks, including the lead track and live favourite ‘Spit At Stars’, along with ‘My Yvonne’ (featuring backing vocals from Adele), ‘Didn’t I’, ‘Cold Thin Line’ and ‘Jack Of All Trades’. Jack is recording his debut album and, with his band, is heading out on a huge tour in support of this single. It won’t be long until he returns to each town to play far larger venues
