What their label says...
++ The second full-length from Dieter Sermeus’ The Go Find, which has now expanded into a full band!
Belgian Dieter Sermeus stunned us with his charming and love-lorn debut ‘Miami’ and now he returns with ‘Stars on the Wall’, a record which delivers on all the promise of those initial recordings. ‘Stars on the Wall’ is bigger, brighter and more focused in every way, and this is maybe due to the inclusion of a host of talented collaborators; the laptop sound of ‘Miami’ is all but gone, and Dieter has invited friends and associates to join him in the studio and create the best possible noises. We have drums, guitar, analogue synthesizers, electric piano and his resulting sound has undeniably been magnified. What we are left with is a record that sounds somewhere in-between the gorgeous folk-tinged pop of Sufjan Stevens and the electrified indie of The Postal Service, yet what Dieter offers is at the same time pure, crossover pop music. The album bursts open with the two-minute synth-pop loveliness of ‘Beautiful Night’; and this is in essence what pop music should be about, unpretentious, slim tracks that make the best of their short time on the airwaves rather than indulging in wasteful solos and prog excess. This sentiment carries throughout the album and peaks quickly with the heartbreaking ‘New Year’, a track which could easily challenge the great Deathcab for Cutie as a glorious teenage anthem. This sort of music is without malice or cynicism, it’s here to make you smile, make you cry and to make you sink into enjoyment from beginning to end. Belgium has been kind to us of later with Dieter’s friend and label-mate Styrofoam making worldwide shockwaves, but the next breakout success is sure to be The Go Find; ‘Stars on the Wall’ is music you will find hard to forget!
