Gudrun Gut is one of the most respected females in the German music scene, she runs the successful Monika label, puts together a regular radio show for Berlin’s Radio Eins and was responsible for a whole host of classic German alternative acts, however it has taken here this long to come up with a full solo album. Luckily the full-length was worth the wait, and shows the true breadth of her style, skill and influence incorporating so many of the sounds she has collected over her years of experience in the music scene. The album kicks off with ‘Move Me’ which many may remember from the killer Earsugar Jukebox 7” last year. This track is a perfect introduction to Gudrun’s unique style; unpredictable samples, shuffling quasi-techno beat structures and hushed dead-pan vocals. Oddly, this upbeat electro-tango hit is followed by a rather bizarre rework of Smog’s ‘Rock Bottom Riser’ featuring Third Eye Foundation man Matt Elliott and Uta Heller. This move perfectly represents what Gudrun Gut’s music is about – a heady sense of pop style with a cynical eye towards the excesses and abscesses of a melting scene. Elsewhere in the record we find Gudrun whipping up a hip-hop fairytale in the shape of ‘The Wheel’ and the riot-grrl lite ‘Girl Boogie 6’ which featured on the acclaimed Girl Monster cd compilation. Overall though this is a varied disc which needs to be heard in its entirety to be truly understood, Gudrun has spent her time wisely working in music, collecting ideas and inspiration and now she has seen fit to let us explore them. ‘I Put a Record on’ is a remarkable piece of work and one which should easily transcend the electronic genre into bigger, brighter place – put it on!
