Rykestrasse 68 by Hanne Hukkelberg

MINGUS RUDE's latest up dates includes the latest opus in the canon of works by a favourite of mine HANNE HUKKELBERG. She last appeared on Leaf with the beautifully beguiling "LittleThings", her latest release on Netwerk is "Ryestrasse 68" seems to favour a more orchestrated approach rather than the improvisatory starting point of jazz and electronica. Hanne possesses a great singing voice matched by an equally strong abilty at picture forming song structures as evidenced on "The North Wind" which is no doubt a reference to her native Norwegian weather system. What appeals to me the most about this particular Scandanavian singer-songwriter his her attention to detail, particularly in the way the sounds match the words and the atmosphere of particular songs, check her cover of the Pixies "Break My Body" which flips the agressive attack of the original into something more contemplative and alluring.

Norwegian singer Hanne Hukkelberg’s 2005 debut album ‘Little Things’ was a  charming impression of life in Oslo, notable for its imaginative use of found sounds and eclectic array of instrumentation. Her elfin but idiosyncratic persona coupled with a lazily seductive voice drew comparisons  with everyone from Joanna Newsom and Björk, to Stina Nordenstam and Billie Holliday. Her second album ‘Rykestrasse 68’ is a tribute to the six months she recently spent living in Berlin and is far less whimsical, with a moodier, more widescreen production.Album includes a live version of ‘Searching’ from Hanne’s debut album. The studio version is currently being used by Space NK in their cinema and TV ad campaign  http://www.spacenk.co.uk/SpaceNK/discovery.aspxAn enhanced CD element includes a promo video for ‘A Cheater’s Armoury’, which will be utilised as a key radio song.Album also includes Hanne’s version of the Pixies classic ‘Break My Body’, a favourite of the band themselves!
