What we say

Rating: unmoved This record left our Mingus Rude feeling unmoved.

PETE MOLINARI: "Virtual Landslide", 7" on Big Bertha. Sounds like a touch Alt-Country to me, twang and strum singer-songwriter gubbins. Dragged up from them there swamp environments by the looks of the sleeve.

What the label says:

Big Bertha is proud to announce its arrival with the debut single by Pete Molinari, the young country blues loner genius of the Medway Delta. Produced by Liam Watson at Toe Rag Studios, these two songs are so good that Watson and Big Bertha’s Will Hodgkinson almost came to blows over which should be the A-side — so they both are. There She Still Remains is a melancholic country lament complete with slide guitar by BJ Cole that’s reminiscent of 60s Nashville at its finest. Virtual Landslide filters the weight of history through Molinari’s remarkable falsetto: you’ll hear shades of Woody Guthrie, Jimmy Scott and Patsy Cline in a voice and a poetry that is entirely Molinari’s own. Born into a large Maltese/Italian/Egyptian family in Chatham, Kent, Molinari had an odd childhood. While his friends were listening to Oasis and Nirvana he developed a deep infatuation with the Billie Holliday, John Coltrane, Leadbelly and Bob Dylan records of his elder brothers. “We had a sideboard unit with a record player,” he remembers. “I would sit and stare at these records going round while my brothers were out playing football.” Discovering himself to be lacking in the academic and athletic departments, Pete devoted his life to art. “My parents came to this country to work and they found my decision a hard one to accept. And I’ve had hundreds of jobs, from working in a factory to digging potatoes, that have only lasted two or three days because I’m only ever thinking about songs.” Pete’s Catholic father also found it hard to deal with having a hipster son who was digging On The Road and The Bhagvad Gita when he should have been in church. In 2003 a month in New York turned to two years. Pete played beat-era Greenwich Village dives like The Café Wha? and Arlene’s and built a cult following. When he returned to Chatham the painter-poet-musician Billy Childish suggested recording an album. “We made it in a day in Billy’s kitchen. He got out an old Revox tape machine and recorded it live. I was used to people showing interest and doing nothing, but Billy just got on with it. He’s a huge inspiration.” Now, bolstered by the stereo production quality of the legendary Toe-Rag Studios, Pete has stepped up to the next level. Soon you will be as excited as we are.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
