What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Ant feeling ecstatic.

After the 'Virtual' 12" reissue last week from Soma THE BLACK DOG 22 track double CD retrospective of early classic and rare material is with us. Digitally remastered the tracks sound pristine. Long out of print the original records sell for silly money and many are available for the first time on CD. From early breakbeat experiments of 'Tactile' to melodic Detroit inspired gems like 'Techno Playtime' this is a huge nostalgia trip that will have old techno heads reminiscing about the good old days and younger folks realizing what an instrumental role this act played in the evolution of UK underground electronic music. Hopefully Soma will put out a few more off here on vinyl. Regardless it's a compilation well worth a checking. The stuff of legend.

What the label says:

A double CD collection of digitally remastered early rarities and classics from electronic pioneers The Black Dog.·Only pressed in small numbers, long out of print and scratched through overuse, many of these classics are now so rare they are changing hands for big money. Soma are bringing these releases back from the archives, completely digitally re-mastered to show today's technoheads where their music really came from.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
