DJ Methodist gets a reissue of his cover of Joy Division's "Digital", complete with "Babbacombe Lee on the flip of the new Post Office Records release. Not a direct imitation but definetly summoning up the punk spirit in a strangley Fall style riffarama way. I'm sure not Martin Hamnet would approve though.First released as a self-distributed (and long-solld-out) 500 copy 7-inch in the summer of 2005, DJ Methodist’s infamous cover of the renowned Joy Division pounder from 1978 is now reissued for wider consumption in a newly remastered version, with freshly added composition on the b-side. With vocals by Molara of UK reggae jammers Zion Train - not that you'd know it from the breathy, unkempt and distorted delivery – DJ Methodist has turned the track into 150 idiotically perfect seconds of surging electro-punk bass and rushing synth fx, reverential to the dynamic of the original but injected with a hectic new personality of its own. Heavily played and reviewed when first released 2 years ago, Steve Lamacq said “some people would consider it heresy to cover a Joy Division tune, but I think this is really rather good”, while The Wire opined “I saw someone somewhere write that this is electronica, but it sure sounds like pure, timeless UK DIY grub to me.” B-side ‘Babbacombe Lee’ is an atmospheric electronic piece evoking a Devonshire folk story of the late 1800’s, and both tracks are taken from the forthcoming DJ Methodist album ‘Seven Nights’, a psychogeographical journey to the British seaside.
