Rating: happy This record left Gary Gilmore feeling happy.

After recently seeing Le Reno Amps playing in glasgow live I was intrigued to hear how the sound would translate from stage to whatever digital media people use to listen to "records" these days!

The album is a gentle, quiet version of the live set, and no worse for that. Songs like Beautiful (my time has come), How you Did Me Wrong and Wound Up, stand out among the 13 odd tracks (no numbers!) that represent a fair expression of the twin talents of Scott Maple and Al Nero.

They reminded me a bit of Ben Kweller, Willie Mason with the word "quirky" springing to mind, although they are different form those artists in the way they use tight harmonies to emphasis the lyrics and melodies.

The album is worth the effort but my best advicewiould be to go see them when they are beefed up with the addition of drum & bass to provide a cracking good sound.

What the label says:

"Country-Punk with a smidgeon of Power-Pop. It's like the Everly Brothers teaming up with The Pixies, whilst Tom Waits and Weezer try and get a word in" - Vic Galloway, Radio Scotland. Le Reno Amps are an exciting young alt-country band from Glasgow whose previously released radio-friendly debut album saw them pick up many fans including Radio Scotland and BBC Radio 1 who had the band in for live sessions. The follow up “So For Your Thrills…” on Pet Piranha Records opens with the wonderful song “Dawn Says” before continuing with tracks that showcase the bands eclectic influences and masterful songwriting. Having toured with Rough Trade’s Brakes by invitation, it’s easy to see why they’ve shared stages with likes of Michael Marra, The Rakes, Sons and Daughters, Brakes, King Creosote, Arab Strap and The Stranglers. First single from the new album “Wound Up” has already been played on Radio 1 and with the band scheduled to gig throughout 2007, it’s going to be a busy year! "They're rooted in the blues with a punk aesthetic, but veer boldly into country balladry and sexually-explicit punk numbers" - The Herald. "..a shifting of pace and style that sets them aside from obvious comparisons e.g. White Stripes or Sons and Daughters" - Is This Music?

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
