What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Maggie feeling happy.

Here's a 12" from Sheffield's FEEDLE. Instantly I think I've fucked up the needle (which the lads laugh at me for cos its just a noisey introduction). The electronic instrumental sets off on its course with warpy floating synths underneath a wall of scratching and noise pollution. Names are being thrown at me like 65 days of Static, Northstation, Lord Aphex Of Twin. Its actually quite a shoe gazy sensitive song but its softness is a window too wide into the soul of Feedle, so he stops you from entering with disturbance and rapid noise moment. B-side starts with a looped John Peel sample then we're back into Feedles fast electronica which never forgets the ear for melody. The drums fly along at an astounding rate like drill and bass. Yeah good stuff

What the label says:

*THE 12” IS LIMITED TO 1,000 COPIES ALL WITH UNIQUE HAND DRAWN SLEEVES*
NOT MUCH IS KNOWN ABOUT FEEDLE, APART FROM THE FACT HE'S FROM SHEFFIELD IN THE NORTH OF ENGLAND.
IT'S BEEN SAID THAT HE'S A DJ WHO CAN'T MIX, A MUSICIAN WHO CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO MAKE MUSIC AND A PERFORMER WHO HATES PERFORMING!!!.
‘SONG FOR DOGS’ IS A SQUEALING, ROARING DISTORTED RACKET UNDERPINNED BY SUBTLE MELODIES WHICH LURK BENEATH A PAINT-SHREDDING CACOPHONY OF FIZZING, LIFE AFFIRMING WHITE NOISE AND DRUMS, WHEREAS ‘HER BRAIN GOES GLOBAL’ IS THE ONLY SONG YOU’LL HEAR THIS YEAR WHICH FEATURES THE VOCAL TALENTS OF JOHN PEEL AND JUDY GARLAND.

About the humble 12":

The 12" is the big brother of records as it's an fatter version of the 7", with a vast scope for an array of remixes and B sides. They are slightly less portable their smaller inched brethren but they're by no means inferior. Often the grooves are spaced wider apart and thus sound much much better. You can fit ample tracks on and if worse comes to worse they make fine plates (should your crockery go awol). Yes, there's a hole but holes are easy to sort out. Once again they're available on many different colours and guises. The best thing about a 12" is the potential vastness of the artwork. Also playable on many speeds!!
