What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Phil feeling ecstatic.

here's a new single by JAMES YORKSTON (still Athlete-less) called Woozy With Cider. Which is what I used to be when I was 16 before I could manage anything else. The sweetness is what I liked. Mind you I had to stop cos it does reek havoc with ones guts. So new single from Yorkie... what's it like? Well it's like Arab Strap essentially mainly cos it's some Scottish dude reading out a monologue over some beautiful sounds. It sounds like Guinness advert fodder and it's gonna appeal to a wider market than usual as I can see the post club clubbers liking this one. It's on 7" and a double 12" which features mixes by Jon Hopkins, King Biscuit Time, Dusty Cabinets, Quiet Village and Kode 9! They're all largely pointless aside from the latter 2 there which I thoroughly enjoyed. Especially the Kode 9 mix cos he's nice. We like him here. Of the 7" features a Big Eyes Family remix which is a bit useful 'n all. Hoorah...

What the label says:

A stellar cast of remixers has been pulled together taking James into new & exciting realms. We start off with ex-Beta Band and pal of James’ King Biscuit Time, a pretty faithful take on the original adding a Bontempi vibe. Jon Hopkins picks up the baton, a member of the Fence Collective and arranger for folks such as Coldplay, replaces the bubbling music below & replaces with a piano backing that fits so perfectly and mournfully you would think it was the original. Keeping the atmosphere, but moving into a completely different zone is the Kode 9 mix, adding broody devilment to the song. Quiet Village start off with a ‘Station To Station’ hovering, gliding into a druggy bass bubbler, one for the stoner, junkie, k-head in your family. We finish on a more cosmic vibe, a housey little number chucking a few other bits and  bobs to the mix, start with sitars, ends with bird song.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.

'you don't have to be bald to work here but it helps'
