Benoit Pioulard - Fir

Fir by Benoit Pioulard

4...according to our on Fri 09 Feb, 2007.

BENOIT PIOULARD follows his album for the Kranky stable with a single for type. 'Fir' Has lots going on. Lots of layers of guitar, effects and little bits coming in and out of the mix. Not unlike Panda Bear in places. The effect on the vocal give an aged feel to the music. Like it could have been recorded years ago but then little washes of electronics bring it right into now. Interesting stuff.

Chicago-based Tom Meluch has very quickly elbowed himself into the music scene – within merely a few months his bedroom-crafted visions have become embedded in the hearts and minds of so many thanks to the hugely acclaimed album ‘Precis’. Now, as part of the Type 7” series Meluch returns with three more classic tracks, taking his sound if it could be possible up to even further melancholic heights. The disc kicks off with the sun-bleached pop of ‘Fir’, a moment which could be considered synonymous with Benoit Pioulard – rasping, poorly recorded guitars and rattling percussion accompanying Meluch’s ever more confident voice to create something that sounds perfectly suited to the 7” format. This is perfect pop music as seen through frosted glass, the Beach Boys dubbed to tape too many times or the Beatles thrown in the Microwave on defrost. Flip the record over though for Meluch’s most successful moment, the paean to the dumbstruck lover ‘Forming at the Mouth’. It’s a regularly tackled subject but Meluch manages to inject it with love, life and most importantly humility. Through the crumbling instruments and buzzing of effects it is easy to hear a beating human heart – and what more can you ask for than this?
