RJD2 has signed to XL who are (presumerably) hoping to bring his brand of prog hop to the masses. His new 7" single is called 'You Never Had It So Good' and it's different for him! For starters it has vocals which I don't think I've heard in much of his gear before. It's not really hip hop or prog to be honest. There's a very slight hip hop beat in as far as there's a degree of funky syncopation about it. If Little Barrie was more indie and less funky it would sound like this....I'm also reminded of The Superimposers and in the chorus I can hear some Badly Drawn Boy in the vocals/ piano.... There you go.... short and sweet and not even a tiny bit rude...“One of the few DJs who seems like an artist rather than just a record collector” - Rolling Stone. His first release for new label XL Recordings will be a limited edition vinyl of 500 copies featuring the tracks ‘You Never Had It So Good’ and ‘Just When’.·Both tracks showcase his gift as a singer-songwriter – the former track in the classic pop sense and the latter his more recognisable leftfield, Hip Hop direction of old.
