To Go Home by M. Ward

M. WARD has a new single out on 4AD called To Go Home. It's a CD single and limited double 7" job. The 1st time I'd heard him proper was when the Post War album came out a few months ago. This single instantly hit me as a a great tune. Timeless..... I can hear a lot of Cass Mccombs in this and it's just proper pop music as far as I'm concerned.  But this is all probably cos it's a Daniel Johnston cover and I always thought Cass sounded like Mr Johnston.... thus the circle is complete... I can go home now. If you're a fan of Cass you'll more than likely want to check this out superb little tune. The piano in it is well lush! Also the track called Cosmopolitan Pap reminds me of The Unknown Stuntman by Lee Majors!- Phil

The follow-up EP to M Ward’s fifth and finest studio album, 2006’s ‘Post War’, features Matt’s rollicking cover of Daniel Johnston’s ‘To Go Home’ plus three exclusive recordings which feature contributions from much the same sterling posse. So, Neko Case contributes backing vocals to the title track, while long-time M Ward mentor / champion Howe Gelb (of Giant Sand) drops some honky-tonk magic into ‘Cosmopolitan Pap’. Rachel Blumberg, of The Decemberists, Norfolk & Western, and the M Ward touring band, adds a typically great drum part to the sorrowful ‘Human Punching Bag’. The closing track is a euphoric take on Jimmie Dale Gilmore’s anthemic ‘Headed For A Fall’ with an authentically showstopping swagger and a cast of thousands including the aforementioned Neko Case and Jim James.
