The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse by The Besnard Lakes

Canada's THE BESNARD LAKES release their 2nd LP. This one is called The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse and it's a follow up to the Earworm released debut album Volume One. This time they've picked up members of Godspeed and The Dears along the way. The sound is packed with layers upon layers and the opening track clearly is indebted to Brian Wilson. In fact throughout the whole album the vocals seem to owe a lot to Pet Sounds. A lot of the music itself and songs sound a lot like Pink Floyd (mid 70's ish). Throughout the album I'm reminded of Super Furry Animals, Low, Spiritualized and loads more folks...... BUT The Besnard Lakes don't sound like any of these. They have their own thing going on which seems to be getting scarcer and scarcer these days. A total doozy of a record. Canada is the new America!

Rich with Beach Boys style harmonies, Roy Orbison reverbs & orchestra, Pink Floyd’s pacing & Freddy Mercury's falsetto, ‘The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse’ is a luxurious foray into sound & music. ‘The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse’ was recorded by Jace Lasek at the Breakglass Studios (whose production credits include Wolf Parade, Islands, Sunset Rubdown and Stars, amongst others) with his wife and band member, Olga Goreas. The other members of The Besnard Lakes, Steve Raegele, Nicole Lizée, and Kevin Laing, contributed as well. Nicole wrote dark string and horn parts, Steve wrote dark guitar solos, Kevin, dark drumming. Also joining in on the making of this record are George Donoso III from The Dears, Chris Seligman from Stars, Sophie Trudeau from Godspeed / Silver Mt. Zion and Jonathan Cummins from Bionic / Doughboys.
