What their label says...

Birdengine is the alias of reclusive artist Lawry Joseph Tilbury. Hailing from the deepest Dorset countryside, his music captures the imagination with tales of dead mermaids, kings trapped in jars, feral children and the moon. Lawry began making music as a child, often venturing out at night into the fields and forests surrounding his childhood home, with a broken nylon guitar, record player and a couple of carefully scratched and doctored records, performing his ramshackle and melancholy sound for only himself the woodland creatures and the moon. He has since fled the countryside and moved to a nearby city but has managed to hold on to the eerie and pastoral sound that infiltrates his music. Recording only on a 4-track tape recorder, he harbours a deep loathing for computers and digital equipment, opting instead for the humble hiss of a tape cassette. His debut Drift release ‘I Fed Thee Rabbit Water’ was recorded entirely by Lawry, with no thought to present his songs as anything other than they are, odes to all things dark and magical! Lawry’s style has been compared to that of Daniel Johnston. Others say that he’s as unique as they come, with his dark and twisted tales from the west country woodland. Lawry does however cite his influences as a combination of Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Clinic and H.G. Wells - also the Dorset countryside, refridgerators in woodland and dead sheep. Lawry states the overriding theme of his album as a retrospective look into his childhood. In essence the album has the magical quality of sounding creepy, but effortlessly intriguing at the same time.
