What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Maggie feeling happy.

Now the new album from OF MONTREAL on polyvinyl. This isn't an album to brush off with a flippant comment. It's innovation and originality is to be admired as it veers from cheeky holiday disco to orchestrated pop. The vocals are double tracked and awkward, hitting some unexpected and swooping lines and you never know if its going to be predictable or weird... I guess that makes it unpredictable. Sometimes its sounds like Wham and sometimes like a crazy brother of Wham. The one who never lost the weight, took of the glasses and got the admiration he deserved. The one who put all his ideas into a nutty album like this rather than getting wanked off in public toilets . The vocals also hark from the 80's sometimes sounding like Phil Oakey and Robert Smith. They lead this album into a space that Of Montreal have created  for themselves and they've filled it oh so gloriously. (I seriously think she was listening to the music in her head, not this album x Brian) Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? is on CD and LP

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Brian feeling ecstatic.

The new OF MONTREAL album was reviewed by Maggie too. I've kept his hilarious words in as an amusing contrast but really, this is an astonishing album made by a seriously bizarre talent. His love of cracked multi layered pop is schizophrenically widescreen. He puts the Beatles to shame with his grandiose ideas of how a song should sound. 'Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?' has the feel of an era straddling opus. There's more cheek than any of those overblown 70s practitioners here but he condenses it all into an INSANELY glorious pop maelstrom that's celebratory yet unpretentious. He simultaneously makes me think of Ariel Pink, Beck, ELO, Tom Vek, Magnetic Fields, Patrick Wolf, Cex, Field Music, DAT Politics & the Elephant 6 crew. Truly, there's not a single dull moment on this wonderful album. We haven't been able to leave it alone. Joyous, fizzing pop. Celebratory soul with it's heart in the psychedelic 60s but it's pulse is firmly on the NOW & even the future. The stuff indie discos of tomorrow should be made of. How many layers & ideas are on this ridiculous album? The programming & musical blends are faultless. The vocals swoop & soar. It's a merry-go-round of kaleidoscopic proportions that just gets more & more involving with each listen. We all dig it here so much that it just HAS to be AOTW. Polyvinyl double vinyl & handsomely packaged CD. The first classic of 2007!

What the label says:

During the last three years of Montreal have been on a tear: releasing 2004's Satanic Panic in the Attic and 2005's The Sunlandic Twins and spreading their dance party-inducing live shows to the masses. Now, of Montreal have created their masterpiece with Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? (streets January 23rd). It's an irresistible and remarkable album, sounding like a logical extension of the erratic indie-disco sounds of The Sunlandic Twins. However, Hissing Fauna is also the most personal of Montreal album to date, with Kevin Barnes, lead of Montreal songwriter, pouring tremendous amounts of emotion, heartbreak, frustration and elation into its twelve tracks. Be sure to check the band out on their 55-date US tour in support of HF. Also, be sure to pick up a copy of the record on double 180 gram vinyl and get four bonus tracks plus a code for a free digital download of the album too!

About the humble LP:

The LP is the daddy of formats. 12" inches of sheer joy. The LP adds to the glory of the 12" record as it can be played at a slower speed (33rpm instead of the usual 45rpm for singles), consequently more musical joy can be had. Played on a decent deck the sound of an LP is about a million times better than any other format. They look fantastic...... a nice gatefold sleeve with a information rich inner sleeve will keep you entertained for hours even before your stylus has chance to make eye contact with it's 12" prey. An essential part of musical heritage which will never be forgotten. It still does play at a multitude of speeds but as it's recorded to be played slower they normally sound ridiculous sped up. Though double albums can make up for this slight inadequacy by ramming more tunes into your ears for your money. Utterly essential.
