Never usually too keen on Matthew HERBERT's oh-so-clever big band "techno" & micro jazz house grooves but his new EP is quite intriguing so maybe i'm needing to do a spot of rewinding throughout his boffin-esque highbrow career. 'Back back back back' is an itchy, hypnotic thing that relies on a clean pendulum like click track & some compressed glitchy techno sounds to make some very funky & fresh dancefloor action that raises an eyebrow on my enormous deranged mug. His freaky, minimal, boundary-pushing sound is a little irritating at times for moi but he's the stuff of legend is this man. I think it's the warmth, depth & playfulness that he injects into his kooky vision of techno & house. Only Matmos come close to this organic & original distilation of braindance. Good stuff. 12" on !K7Top eclectic dance genius Herbert returns with a limited edition 12" EP - 500 copies only in the UK and features 4 tracks. Herbert's last album received critical press acclaim
