What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Maggie feeling happy.

Now a split EP from SCHIZO FUN ADDICT and THE BOY FROM SPACE on Bracken records. First up "the Schizo" with a repetitive guitar hook swaddled in echo and distortion (Brian says Eggs, Ant says Sonic Youth). Its got a weirdness that makes it as charming as it is odd with a self believe that that makes it sound like the hippy theme tune to some weird religious cult. 2nd song invites a lady to sing for us over acoustic guitar with a simple 70's style peace song. Now Boy from space and here's another band not settling for the norm. Its hard to pin them down as each track is different to the next. 1st song is a cool instrumental full of hand claps and synth solos. The 2nd song is a Baz Lerman sun screen type effort with a narrative about product knowledge in front of a cheesy dance track like a twisted St Etienne.

What the label says:

Aled Jones (not that one) at Glasswerk captured the essence and said it better than we ever could:
Occasionally one comes into contact with something so insanely original that words simply fail to grasp the brilliance of the endeavour. Schizo Fun Addict release a split EP with The Boy From Space on the 5th of February 2007 on Bracken Records and if the late great John Peel was still with us this would be a release that would be featured on his Radio 1 show.
It’s hard to know exactly where to start when it comes to Schizo Fun Addict only to say that commercial sensibilities are something that has undoubtedly passed them by. In an age when becoming famous in the music industry takes about two minutes for some bands via myspace and the whore rag that is the NME, it’s refreshing to hear a band that cares for nothing but being original. Their style is one of a guitar band from another dimension. Both tracks are equally outstanding and bring to mind the Velvet Underground and Sonic Youth, The Dandy Warhols and God knows what else. The moody overtone casts a long dark shadow over the sound and it’s a cloud you need to be under.
The Boy From Space showcases both ‘The Farm’ and ‘Wouldn’t You Rather be a Winner?’, on this release with both as unique as the SFA sound before them. They seem made in someone’s garage with the minimum of production. ‘The Farm’ is a simple instrumental that puts you in mind of a Mexican gathering somewhere in Tijuana. As a startling opposite comes ‘Wouldn’t You Rather be a Winner?’, a dance track with the monotone voice playing like a self-help motivator for your sense of inner happiness. The UK music scene has grown so repetitive and dull it’s almost frightening when somebody dares to be different. We are told that the things to watch this year are acts like Mika and The Twang, which is basically the new James Morrison and Arctic Monkeys of this year, how original. The music world sadly needs a return from the likes of Captain Beefheart, Sun Ra or George Clinton in some form or guise. God only knows what may become of Schizo Fun Addict or The Boy From Space, in terms of massive radio play et al, very little I assume. But this is the music that everybody needs to have pumped into their brains so they can at least say they listened to something different once in their dull grey lives.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
