When I placed CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH's debut in my top 10 of the last 10 years last spring i knew I wasn't just falling victim to some new fad. I sent a friend a copy who converted her entire street a week later to the sound of Montreal's euphoric indie soul sensations. equal parts rejoicing gospel, early James (that spindly, manic freedom of expression) bits of Hidden Cameras/skewed NZ pop, David Byrne's yearning wail, Cocteau Twins otherwordly twittering, Arcade Fire's epic grandeur & even funked up hypnotic Kraut-wave. Ooooh they're special. And they have their own sound. This spiritual, earthy collective continue their thouroughly engaging journey on album number 2, 'Some Loud Thunder' Dave Fridmann nearly fucks the first two tracks with his irritating echo laden distortion that suggests the drummer is inside your head trying to twat a wasp on his snare, maxed to +11. What would Spinal Tap say? he turns it down to let the rest of the album unfurl in beautiful fashion, showcasing the same deep, musical passion that the debut wallowed in, the feel is a little more sprawling & experimental, yet the songs contain the same hugely emotive chord changes & mesmerising vocal harmonies to provide us with a freewheeling, varied & rewarding album, full of warmth, wonder & organic mantras for the soul. Fucking splendid stuff!Just ten months after the UK release of the debut Clap Your Hands Say Yeah album. Recorded in summer 2006, between international festivals and headline shows, including the sold out Forum, London in July (which went ballistic), the new record was completed in Tarbox Studios in upstate New York with producer Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev’s Deserters Songs, Flaming Lips The Soft Bulletin and Sleater Kinney’s final The Woods).
