Edition of 1000; total running time: approx 57 min. Xome is a highly regarded noise artist from San Francisco, perhaps best-known for his live shows—fantastic displays of split second timing and rapid jumps between drenching feedback and gristly distortion. Goat, from Texas, is certainly as well known as Xome but much more reclusive; his infrequent and incendiary five minute live sets are the stuff of lore, and his releases (also frustratingly infrequent) are always cause for much rejoicing in the noise community. SIXES is a demonic action figure from Oakland, CA who alters air pressure in any given room with his saturation tests of fuzz and distortion chaos. He recently appeared on the California 10 LP boxset (as did Xome) and has a solo LP on Enterruption. Each artist in this collection brings a different tint to noise music; Xome delivers six short related pieces that explore high end and feedback squall as well as explosive attacks of distorted chaos; he’s extremely deft at balance anticipation from quiet moments to capture your breath before attacking from another direction. Goat delivers a 20 minute piece that makes me think of earth movers jousting on a field of aluminum cans and glass containers; if you’ve ever wondered what the death throes of machines—magnified and amplified—sound like, this would be a good place to start. SIXES delivers three tracks of blistering motor oil splashed across your eyes; deep ugly wrought tones scrape flesh right off the balls of your feet and serve it up to you in blood sauce.
